OUGD603 Brief 09: Evaluation

Evaluation:
For my final brief I wanted it to be packaging focused as this is the career direction I am heading towards. I thought that it would be really beneficial to work on a brief with an illustrator  where the artwork is ready for me. I enjoyed having complete control of the brief as I was able to focus the direction I wanted it to head in. Meg was really easy to work with, we mainly communicated over email which worked really effectively. She also produced the work really quickly capturing the style that I wanted. When I found some issues with the formatting of the patterns, Meg sorted out the problems extremely quickly which made my life a lot easier.

I did struggle to work with the pattern however because it was so busy, I needed to find a way to make sure the type didn’t get lost. I really enjoyed the challenge and I was able to figure out a way around it that didn’t take anything away from the overall design. The previous briefs where I have improved my type and layout skills really came in handy to help me tackle this. Through feedback and testing I was able to find the most appropriate outcome that worked harmoniously with the design. The typeface I have chosen is big and bold to grab attention whilst still having a fun/friendly character. Keeping the type white has helped to keep a clean and healthy overall feel to the brand.

Overall I have really enjoyed doing this brief and I am really pleased with the final outcome. Using my research I was able to identify what would appeal to children whilst also appealing to the parent/guardian that would purchase it. The bright, bold pattern helps to grab attention and stand out from other brands - being vibrant and engaging. This will make children want to pick it up, whilst the joke on the side really helps the packaging to interact with the child.

I have received constant feedback during this project which has helped me to make decisions quickly, as well as giving me good advice to improve the overall design. Using a mock-up has made the design look more professional, although it was difficult working out how to apply the pattern initially.

OUGD603 Brief 08: Evaluation

Evaluation:
Robot Food is one of my favourite studios and I really admire there ‘Project Disrupt’ which inspired me to create my own. I really engaged with this brief as I wanted to produce a really strong packaging design. I think this determination allowed me to do quite thorough research where I gathered lot’s of information. I wanted to use this information to expand the brief into a campaign, producing something that would aid peoples knowledge on sun cream protection. However, as I spent a lot of time refining the packaging design I was unable to expand it any further at this point.

I enjoyed working with type and layout again and I think that it is definitely something I am improving at. I also learnt how to create gradients, which is something I had never done before, and I think that I have produced some really engaging effects. Throughout this brief I have had constant feedback as I really wanted to produce a strong design. I think because of this I have a really successful outcome that I am proud of.

I decided to buy a digital mock-up for this brief as I wanted the design to look as professional as possible. I think that this really elevated the overall presentation and enhanced the design. If I were to do this brief again I would allow time for to expand the campaign further.

OUGD603 Brief 07: Evaluation

Evaluation:
I wanted to take part in secret 7 as I had really enjoyed doing it in first year, it allowed me to come up with really creative ideas and concepts. Initially I struggled to get my ideas flowing but once I got into it I tried to create as many different design variations as possible. I had learnt from previous briefs that I need to spend more time developing the design so I tried to make that a focus for this project. I enjoyed experimenting and creating different visuals, even though some of them didn't work as well it was good to learn from that.

I think that I managed my time for this brief reasonably well and I was able to produce three finalised designs. I liked how my ideas were quite different and took a more light-hearted and humorous route. The outcomes I produced are relatively simple but I think that they all work as engaging visuals that reference the punk era. This brief was good for me to improve my skills on Illustrator and create varied outcomes quickly.

OUGD603 Brief 02: Evaluation

Evaluation:
I chose to do this brief because I wanted to improve my skills working with typography. As I had set a short deadline for it to be completed, it encouraged me to work a lot faster. This was beneficial for me as sometimes I spend too long on briefs and don’t get as much done as I want.

I enjoyed doing this brief as I took a more hands on approach cutting and sticking my design. Approaching the brief with this method allowed me to consider placement and layout a lot more, which was beneficial to my design. It was also quite nice to take a step back from a screen and create things physically. I think if I was to do this brief again I would try to think more about type manipulation rather than layout and placement. Overall I am pleased with my final outcome as I feel that it is a striking visual however I don’t know if that takes away from the actual type itself. Typography is something that I want to learn more about and engage with it in different ways and I do feel like I have learnt from this brief.

OUGD603 Brief 01: Evaluation

Evaluation:
This was my first brief of the year and I was eager to start designing again. I love working collaboratively on projects so it was a good way to start. We all worked really well as a team sharing the workload and setting appropriate deadlines. We worked closely coming up with ideas and design developments which really helped to shape the final outcome.

I enjoyed the experimental nature we took with the design, producing something completely different from previous creative network posters. We all managed to incorporate our own styles and produced a really striking and engaging design. Unfortunately we didn't win this brief as possibly our design was too experimental and didn't include any images of the speakers work, but I am still happy with what we produced. During the project I improved on my layout skills as we made sure that the information was clearly presented. I also gained a better understanding of typography and how it can be applied in engaging ways.

OUGD603 Brief 09: Final Designs

Final Designs:

Overall the design is bright, vibrant and engaging, reflecting the healthy nature of the juices appropriately. The hand rendered paper cut style of the illustrations creates a friendly and open design that would appeal to children. Putting a joke on the side of the carton will increase the overall interaction with the product. The bright colour contrast draw attention and create excitement making it stand out on a shelf. The type works harmoniously with the background to provide a cohesive visual. Information is clear and organised to provide clarity on what is in the juices. The design not only appeals to children but adults will engage with the fresh and healthy visuals. The carton can be easily recycled and re-sealed so it doesn't have to be drunk all at once and prevents spillages.

OUGD603 Brief 08: Final Design

Final Design:
Using all of the feedback that I had gained I was able to improve the overall design.

The brand has a strong concept relating to ultra-violet light, this is something that hasn’t been done before. The purple gradient reflects the brand appropriately while still remaining gender neutral. Having high shelf impact it would also stand out against other brands whilst targeting the 18 - 25 demographic. The typeface used is open and friendly making it as accessible and legible as possible. The SPF number is large to be instantly recognisable and seen from a distance. The overall layout is clean and clear, presenting the information in an easily understandable format. Having the design slightly wrap around the bottle also makes it more visually appealing.
