OUGD503 Penguin Random House UK Student Design Award 2017 - Finalising

OUGD503 Penguin Random House UK Student Design Award 2017 - Finalising:

Taking forward design idea 2, I decided to gain some further feedback to help finalise the design. It was suggested that the white rectangles surrounding the type would look a lot better if it was torn paper, as it looks to rigid at the moment. Rough edges could be achieved by scanning in torn/crumpled paper. This will make it look like a ransom note type of thing - relating to the journalistic nature of the book as well as the link to crime.

The typeface that I have chosen was considered too thin and maybe slightly too sci-fi, giving the wrong impression of the book. This is something I am going to play around with further to try and find the most appropriate typeface. The feedback was positive regarding the colours, the black background has a high impact that will stand out on shelves. Another consideration was the leading of the type on the back page to try and make it more legible and easier to read.

Taking this feedback into consideration I produced a revised design.

Typeface:
Barrio - rhythmic contrast and amateur appearance make it suitable to look like ransom note letters. However I don't know if it looks too friendly which changes the tone of the publication.

Avenir - This has improved the legibility of the back cover.

I didn't scan in my own paper but I found some torn paper online which I can use:

I decided to try a different heading typeface to see what effect that has.

Typeface:
Righteous - Grid based and geometric in execution, the letterforms are highly readable at a range of point sizes. The curved edges that are paired with sharp angles provides an interesting contrast which sets a hard, cold tone.

This typeface works cohesively with the rest of the design as well as being legible at a distance. Overall the design is eye-catching and really stands out with its high colour contrast.
