OUGD505 Ethics and Sustainability

Ethics and Sustainability:

Ethics: beliefs, morals, principles.
They govern a person's behaviour or the conducting of an activity.

Steven Heller (2003):

'Good design is good citizenship' Milton Glaser
Is good design something that serves as many people as possible?

Awareness, that your work will have an impact.

Nancy Bernard:

'Think globally, act locally'

Reality branding

Anthony Grayling:
Can graphic design have a code of ethics?
Quality of life.

Ethics within graphic design should be considered because of the impact that it has within society. Graphic design is a means of communicating messages and influencing decisions, designers need to be conscious and try to have a positive impact. Being aware of other culture, beliefs, religions, etc. is important to see what impact your design will have as well as giving a voice to those that don't really have one.

Group work questions:

1. Do you think ethics is important to graphic design?

2. What defines 'good design'?

3. What does ethical practice entail - what principles?

Sustainability:
- Social equity
- Environmental stewardship
- Economic prosperity (capital and growth)

Sustainability relating to ethics - packaging

Eric Benson:
Best practices
- Respect and care for community
- Improve quality of life
- Design for re-use / longevity
- Minimise waste

Sustainability within graphic design is also another important consideration, it is divided into three areas, social equity, environmental stewardship and economic prosperity (capital and growth). Designers considering this help to minimise waste and have more respect and care for the community. It helps to improve the quality of life and designs for re-use / longevity. Being sustainable has its limitations within design as it can be too expensive or not practical enough, but it is being conscious of these things to try and do the best you can.
