OUGD603 Brief 05: Party Board Games

Party Board Games:

Pie Face

Easy to understand and can be played any way you want. All you need is some whipped cream for the Pie Face hand. Everyone will get in a circle to take turns. The player whose turn it is spins the wheel and gets a number. That number is the same amount of times they have to turn the crank hand. For each turn, there's a chance that they'll get hit in the face with the whipped cream. The game is fun and involves everyone, as its for a wide range of ages 5+.

221b Baker Street Detective Game

The game is based on the famous stories of the great detective, Sherlock Holmes. The setting is Victorian London and it can be played by as many as six people. The crimes scenarios are pre-written – there are 75 of them in the pack so you get plenty of game play opportunities – and each game should take between an hour and 90 minutes. It’s fun, intelligent and creative, and involves each player taking the role of Holmes, and picking up clues at a variety of locations.

Exploding Kittens

Currently a very popular game, it was funded via Kickstarter, and ranks as the highest funded such product in its history. Despite the name, it’s a fun game for all the family, and one that involves a good deal of strategy. The game is played using cards, and the cards are used to keep the player from drawing an exploding kitten. If that happens, you are out of the game, and there are various ways to use cards to avoid the exploding kitten. You can play with up to five people, and expand it to nine by purchasing a second pack.

The Hot Seat

One person is in the hot seat each round, and has to answer a question about themselves (like "What's the strangest thing I've ever brought online?"). All the other players also have to answer as the person in the hot seat. Fun/humorous for players 4-10.

Social Sabotage

Players challenge each other to post or text truly embarrassing things (Post on Facebook "I'm thinking about selling pics of my feet online."). The player with the courage to follow through on the most combinations is the winner. 3+ players

Codenames

Two teams compete to figure out the assigned codenames of everyone on their teams, while avoiding guessing the names of the other team's agents. Players 2 - 8

Superfight

Combine a character card ("kindergarten class", "the Illuminati") with attribute cards ("is really hangry", "can fly if nobody's watching") to create the ultimate fighter. Defend your ultimate fighter in a head-to-head battle with another player. The rest of the players will vote on who made the best case.

The Metagame

The Metagame is comprised of 200 culture cards (featuring civilization's greatest achievements. Like the Mona Lisa. Or Ms. PacMan.) and 100 opinion cards ('Which feels like first love?' or 'Which is a sign of the apocalypse?'). There are six separate games you can play with the cards, including Debate Club (where you have to argue for your card) and Massively Multiplayer Metagame (which can be played with an indefinite number of people). Players 2 - 50

What Do You Meme?

Pair caption cards with photo cards to make the best meme (as judged by a different player every round). Players 3 - 20

Joking Hazard

Complete hilarious and tasteless comic panels for the judgement of your peers. Players 3 - 10

The Game of Things

Everybody writes down their answers to questions ("Things you shouldn't do naked,"), and then the group guesses who wrote what. 4+ players

CatchPhrase

Players divide into two teams. One player at a time tried to get their team to guess the word or phrase that appears on the game's little screen (without actually saying the word). 4+ players

Double Ditto

The Ditto Master reads out a card ("dog breeds," "candy bars," "things you see at the beach"), and players write two responses. The goal is write things you think another player will write.

Stipulations

Players try to rain on each other's parades as creatively as possible by adding stipulations to another player's superpower, occupation, lifetime supply, or dream (as specified on the game's cards). A judge chooses the funniest stipulation as the winner of the round.

Telestrations

Draw what you see then guess what you saw for hilarious and unpredictable outcomes. Players 4 - 8

Dixit

Using a deck of cards illustrated with dreamlike images, players select cards that match a title suggested by the "storyteller", and attempt to guess which card the "storyteller" selected.  3 - 6 players

Say Anything

Say Anything is a light-hearted game about what you and your friends think. It gives you the chance to settle questions that have been hotly debated for centuries. For instance, "What is the most overrated band of all time?" or "Which celebrity would be the most fun to hang out with for a day?". Players 3 - 8

Snake Oil

Invent your own zany two-word products – Rumour Mirror! Burp Balloon! – and sell them to all types of wacky customers. If the round's customer buys your product, you win!

Last Word

Be the first player to advance to the finish by creatively connecting subjects and letters, while racing a random-interval timer and the other players. For example, Subject: “Vegetables”… Letter: “C”.  Players yell out… carrots, cucumbers, corn, cauliflower, the player with the Last Word before the timer sounds advances.
