OUGD504 Studio Brief 01 - Form Follows Function

Form Follows Function:

The idea that design should be based primarily upon it's intended purpose and function not purely aesthetics. Modernists of the early 20th century took this approach to product design. It asks the question are oversized books / coffee table books that functional?

This is NOT minimalism although it has connotations with it, having stripped back aesthetics. Within print design its important to first think about the functionality of the piece, considering content, audience and medium.

CONTENT
This is really important as this is what you want to communicate. Understanding the content – what it is and what it’s aims are will help with making design decisions. What is this information trying to do? When relating it to the real world of design you need to understand the aims of the client. Engaging with the client, to work out where they want to take it, is important as it can save time and energy.

AUDIENCE
The main aim of any piece of design is to communicate the message, but there needs to be an audience for the message and they are a key element. Understanding who they are, what they do, how they will interact with the design, where they will most likely be and at what times, etc.

THE MEDIUM (WHERE)
For example the type of material, the dimensions, it’s location, where, when and how it will be used.

Considering 'form follows function' can help focus a project and make sure that your design is well thought out and covers all of the bases. I think it will help me to further my research and really push my design to be the best it can be.
