Layout:
For the front cover of my book I want there to be a 0.5cm border which will run through the whole of the book. This border will provide a pop of colour which will contrast against the black and white illustrations and the text. The heading will be central at the top of the page with an illustration being central in the middle of the page and a sub heading at the bottom central. This provides a nice shape that is pleasing to the eyes and allows for a more ordered look.
For the next page I want to do an introduction, this time the heading will be flushed left to work cohesively with the body text which will also be aligned to the left. This is due to the fact that there is quite a lot of writing so will improve readability having it aligned from the left. I have also only gone for one column due to the amount of writing, because it is a small space it makes sense to use it all rather than try and split it up. The illustration will be placed in the bottom right corner and the text will wrap around it so that it works cohesively with the design.
For the two pages with the basic cupboard ingredients and basic utensils I want to really utilise illustration rather that words. I want to keep the heading top left and arrange the illustrations around it in the space so that it produces an interesting collage.
For the rest of the recipes the heading will be at the top of the page flushed left to create order to the text. Sub-headings flushed left with the body text underneath. Because of the size of the page I am only using a two column grid system which will split down the middle of the page. This will help to improve readability so that the instructions are easy to read and follow.
I decided to crack on with the design and came up with some quick illustrations for the basic cupboard ingredients.
And the basic utensils and equipment.
The illustrations are cartoony and inaccurate but I liked the playfulness of the style. I also did an illustration for the front cover of a table and chair.
I wanted to find an appropriate typeface that would fit in well with the design and style of the illustrations.
Feedback:
- Simple illustrations, don't want to overcomplicate - ingredients only?
- Binding ideas - stitched, treasury tag, one ring.
- Should I do some hand drawn type for the titles to match illustrations?
- Probably won't have a grid system as I want to make it look like notes - kind of like a cookbook journal.
- 2 colour theme, accent colour
- Paper choice should be smooth and durable.
