OUGD603 Brief 05: Game Design Research

Game Design Research:

I created a pinterest board where I could keep any visuals that would help to inspire us for the game design. This way we were able to see what works effectively and what looks the most visually appealing.

I liked the large scale type and the placement to produce and engaging design. Colour is also used well to attract attention. The packaging design is simple using bold colours and a minimal design.

Cards with simple line illustrations work well, using a minimal 2 colours works well to pop out and draw attention by not being overly complicated.

Minimal 2 colour palette provides a nice contrast, simple design with a clear layout. Reflection of type so that it can be seen from both angles.

Organised type, large and legible, black and white colour scheme.

Variation of bright colours used to make the cards more engaging and fun.

Important Factors:
- Colour - bright/bold/fun/engaging/minimal?
- Type - big/bold/legible/organised/reflected.
- Illustrations - simple/line/vector/minimal/clear.

As a group we discussed through these different factors to decide on the direction for the overall design.

Packaging/Rules:
Looking at some card games I had at home gave a better idea of how information is structured and what needs to be put on the box.

On the box for this game is a paragraph description to set the scene and create excitement around the game. In a box in the right hand corner it clearly says what is contained in the box as well as giving important facts about how many people can play the game. Having it sectioned off makes the information stand out so it can easily be found.

On the rule sheet for the game it is split into different sections so that the information is as clear as possible. Using numbers to break down the game play makes it more understandable and easier to read.

The rules for this game are a lot more visual, as it uses icons and simple vector drawings to easily explain the rules. Colour also helps to identify the different sections and make it look as engaging as possible.

On this packaging it uses icons for age and player which can be see easily. There is also a short description of the game which helps to sum the game up in a fun way.
