OUGD505 Studio Brief 02 - Publication Distribution (Print)

Publication Distribution:
The publication has a few different options for how it can be distributed through print and digitally online, this way it will reach a wide range of audiences.

Print
Print will be an effective way to distribute the publication at protests, rallies, workshops and events that the Stand Up For Racism groups hold. This means that people can take this guide away and keep the information, it can then be referred back to or passed on. Printing could be done in large runs on a thin, cheap stock. The bind would be saddle - stitched with staples as this is the most cost effective method.

While printing, cutting and binding my publication I came across a couple of problems, one of them being the double sided print being slightly off. This made it hard for me to cut it down evenly and put in the fold mark. I got two copies printed onto a matt stock at 120gsm, just thick enough so that the ink doesn't bleed through the paper. Unfortunately on the first copy I struggled to get the staples in the right place, this led to me having to unpick them and start again. This made the design look slightly messy and unprofessional.

I was then told about the crease maker and the stapler designed for publications so I decided to use that on my other copy of my publication. As I didn't know how to use the machine I asked someone for help who offered to do this for me. Unfortunately he didn't set the machine up correctly, as he did it by eye, and the crease was about a centimetre out. This unfortunately made the design look poorly made so it will need to be printed out again.

Although this was a big setback and was very frustrating with the deadline coming up at least I know how it will look and how to use the equipment so next time it will hopefully look more professional.

First attempt:

The print produced a nice vivid black, creating a high contrast with the white. The design would need to be cut down with a scalpel as some of the pages are hanging over the edge.

The first double page spread worked well as the bind looks accurate, other pages aren't visible.

The crease wasn't accurate here as the blue from another page is visible.

You can see the marks from the previous staples.

Again the previous staple marks are visible.

Due to the weight of the stock the black ink started to crack on the spine which made the leaflet look old and worn.

Second attempt:

Due to the double crease creating a spine it was hard to get the staples to go on the right crease which led to them being uneven. The black also began to crack again.

The double crease visible on the inside.

Uneven binding visible as other image coming through.

After talking to one of my peers he suggested printing using the double-sided laser printer in one of the fashion rooms as it produces good vivid colours. The stock used in these printers is also thinner weight gsm so could be produced easily and quickly by anyone. This would be beneficial as the design could be sent to the different Stand Up To Racism groups around the country and they have access to easily print it.
