OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Further Sketches and Feedback

The idea I have decided to take forward is the App. The research and feedback that I have gathered suggested that this would be the most appropriate platform to solve the problem for my target audience. An app would easily be accessible for students who rely on there mobiles phones as well as being relatively cheap to buy. It will be easy to use on the go as most people use there phone to look for recipes. In my questionnaire only 1 person uses a cooking app, this suggests to me that there is a gap in the market and something that would stand up to little competition.

Feedback:
In small groups with one member from Only studios I was given some useful feedback to help develop my ideas further. It was suggested that instead of just searching for ingredients you could also search for what to make e.g. lasagne, and it would give you the ingredients for that recipe. I think this is a really good idea as it helps to develop the search aspect which is the main feature within the design. Someone also said that you don't need the shopping list suggestion aspect, they believed that it added too many features onto the app and it was something that they didn't really want.

Currently I do not have a specific company that I am doing this for, or a name for my brand, therefore it was suggested that I could choose something to link it to like BBC Good Food. This is something I could consider doing but it means that I will need to make sure to stick to some of their brand guidelines and colours.

It was picked up on that the main thing that is positive and makes it unique is that it prevents waste. I could also give suggestions to use up items that are about to go out of date.

Scanning receipts is another aspect I could incorporate into the scan items area, as this would automatically add everything you have bought without going through and scanning each item.

Something that I picked up from my questionnaire is that people really engage with images, it was agreed by everyone in the group that I should try to keep it a 50/50 text and image split. A minimal layout was suggested to help keep it clear and clutter free as possible. Maybe even just using black and white rather then using colour. It needs to be friendly and easy.

OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Questionnaire

Questionnaire:
I decided to create a questionnaire to help give me an insight into what people would potentially want to help them and what do they already like and use. This will help me to tailor the functions and what I need to include.

Using this information I think that it is clear that I need to create an app that will be able to search for recipes by using what ingredients you have, and being able to substitute items into recipes.

OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Feedback

Feedback:
In todays session we showed our solutions to our problem and came up with some question to help us gain some valuable feedback. We did this by laying our work out on the desks and going round writing feedback on them. Overall I only got about 6 responses, and I don't think people understood that I had 3 ideas even though I had wrote it down. I don't particularly like this way of feedback as I feel like I don't get as much out of it. I prefer talking to people and bouncing ideas around that way.

Problem : Having ingredients in your cupboards but not knowing what you can make with them.

Solutions:
1. Social website
2. Cooking appliance
3. App

1. Which idea do you think is the most appropriate to answer the problem? Why?

- 1 - The social aspect will help to give more of a range of responses from real people.

- 1 - A community possibly allows the user to access more information.

- 3 - Most appropriate for student target audience as it is the most accessible.

- 3 - Gives an immediate response quickly, will also help to budget and keep track of money and what they are spending.

2. Which do you think will appeal more to students and why?

1 - Student kitchens aren't that big to use the function for storage and date function is not necessarily necessary.

- A calendar will help reduce waste, so you know when food is gone off.

- An app but combine a social aspect.

- Students might not want to ask strangers for advice.

- An app is more accessible for a student target audience.

3. How could I make one of the ideas more accessible to all?

- Live website

- Link to social media, so quick posting of food on instagram, asking friends for opinions. People will see others are using app so will want to get involved.

4. What could I do to make it appeal more towards my target audience (students)?

- Include student offers / cheap food deals, cocktail recipes.

- An app would be easier on the go.

- Create a community of students through the app to share ideas.

- Simplify ingredients.

- Simple and easy to use.

- Incorporate barcode scanner so that it stores your products.

- Easy to find info

5. What else could I include to help answer the problem?

- Something that tells you if someone has borrowed something.

- Options telling you what you could make if you had small other ingredients.

- Different community discussion based on food preferences? Vegetarian / vegan?

- Upload videos of good recipes

- Link to online shopping delivery sites

- Step by step guides

- Clear timings

- Telling you were good food deals are

6. What device would you use to look for a recipe?

- Mobile

- Mobile

- Phone or laptop

- Phone

- Phone

- Ipad

- Laptop

After we had done this and looked through our feedback we had to pair up with someone else to talk through our feedback and get some more in depth answers. I decided that I wanted to go for the app idea so this was the idea that I gained feedback for.

- Recipe pictures need to be large and engaging

- Ingredient search will be the main page, the initial home screen.

- Icons - My food, which already has suggestions based on what you've got
            - Calendar, keeps track of when things are going out of date
            - Shopping List, syncs with internet shop or scan and shop
            - History, keeps track of what recipes you've made
            - Share to social media

- Voice activation to keep hands free

- Step by step, tools needed, 1 screen for step

- Favourites?

- Hints and tips?

- Timer? Suggested pre sets

Talking my idea through with someone really helped me to gain some focus on what it was that I want to include within my app.

OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Sketches

Sketches:
I've done initial idea sketches for my 3 solutions, to help better visualise and gain some feedback on them.

1. Social website - A community of cooking enthusiasts and bloggers who are able o give on hand help, they can suggest meals with the ingredients you have available.

2. Every day cooking appliance - A device which you can make shopping lists on, it knows and keeps track of food. Built in cookbook as it connects to the web, changes due to ingredients you have in. Voice commands.

3. App - that uses filters and tags to give you the best suited recipe with the ingredients you have available.

OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - The Design Process

The Design Process:
Design for screen is the same process as print. I need to focus on evoking an emotional response rather than just for aesthetics.

RESEARCH

- Page Impressions - a request to load a single page of an internet site.

- Unique Users - the number of individual users to a site over a defined period, often a month.

- User Flows - a diagram showing a user's journey, used to show most likely user experience.

- Personas - fictitious characters that are created to represent the different user types within a targeted demographic that might use a sight or product.

- Use Cases - a description of a system's behaviour as it responds to a request that originates from outside of that system.

- One-on-one - person to person interviews

- Focus groups

- SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

- Questionnaires

- Market Segmentation - groups of people/organisations sharing one or more characteristics that cause them to have similar product needs. E.g. location, age, gender, or socioeconomic.

WHO - specific target audience

Individuals:
- What is the age range?

- Will your interface appeal more to men or woman?

- Is the interface specific to a country?

- Are the TA based in urban or rural areas?

- What is the average income of your TA?

- What is their occupation?

- How often do they use interfaces?

- What devices do they use?

Companies:
- What is the size of the company?

- What is the position of the people within?

- Will users be using the site for themselves?

- How large is the budget?

Invent fictional personas.

WHY - why are / would users visit your interface

Motivations:
- Are users looking for general info or specific to achieve a goal.

- If there is a specific goal are they personal or professional?

- Is time on an interface seen as essential or a luxury

Goals:
- Do they want general info/research or are they after something specific

- Are they already familiar with the service or product or do they need to be introduced to it?

- Are they looking for time sensitive information, such as news or updates on a topic?

- Do they need specific information about a product or service to help them decide whether or not to buy/engage with it?

WHAT - what info do your users need and in what order to achieve their goals quickly and effectively.

- Will users be familiar with the subject or brand or do they need to be introduced to it?

- Will users be familiar with the product/service/info I am covering or do they need background info.

- What are the most important features of what you are offering

- What is special about what you offer that differentiates you from competitors

- How often will people engage with your interface

IDEA GENERATION

- Mark-making and sketchbooks
- Mood Boards
- Mind Maps
- Idea Sessions

SOLUTIONS

- Lo Fi - sketches, cheap and quick

- Test and Iterate

- Design Comps

PRODUCTION

Site Maps - a diagram of info that shows the links within the interface.

Wireframes - a simple sketch of key info that needs to go on each page of an interface - hierachy of info - structure for the design phase.

If I follow through this design process I should be able to produce a well informed interface design.

OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Ideas

Ideas:
As I need to come up with 3 distinct solutions for my problem I decided to start doing a mind map of ideas relating to my problem to help me better identify a solution.

1. Social website - A community of cooking enthusiasts and bloggers who are able to give on hand help, they can suggest meals with the ingredients you have available.
