Re-print:
I have noticed that the pattern is in different positions on all three nets. I need the design to be consistent across all three so I am reprinting the design before I send it off.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Final Design & Evaluation
Final Design:
Evaluation:
I wanted to submit to Starpack because of my interest within packaging, I knew that it would be beneficial and I would learn a lot from it being more material focused. I struggled with time constraints during this brief as I was working on two demanding group projects during the same time. I found it hard to give myself enough time to work on this as I didn’t want to let my team down with the other projects. However, because I was working to tight deadlines I have had to make decisions quickly and ask for feedback as much as possible to produce a good design. This actually worked to my favour as I managed to get the project done for the deadline to a good quality and I even got short-listed!
During this project I spent a lot of my time researching as I wanted to come up with a really engaging concept. However, this meant that I didn’t have that much time to complete the design. In the future I need to better manage my time and allow more for different design variations.
As Starpack is more material focused and tin had to be the core element of my design, I learnt quite a lot about it. I found this really interesting and in the future I want to consider the materials I use within packaging a lot more, as it opens up other design possibilities. Working on a packaging brief was beneficial for me to improve my layout skills and I am hopefully getting more of an eye for what works well.
I managed to mock-up my design really professionally as I used a static electric sticker more appropriate for metal, meaning there were no bubbles in the design. I found photographing the work slightly difficult as the tins kept reflecting the light which put too much of a glare on the design. I did however start to feel more confident with a camera and lighting as I worked to overcome the issues.
Overall I have really enjoyed doing this project and I did find it challenging as the tea and coffee market is saturated with lot’s of different designs, making it difficult to be unique. I think that I have managed to produce a modern, minimal design, referencing Ethiopian weaving that would hopefully appeal to the luxury coffee market.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Final Net Designs
Final Net Designs:
I have applied the pattern and the type onto the net.
Orange:
Purple:
Red:
Finishes:
As part of the brief I need to work with different finishes that can be applied to tin to increase the visual appeal.
Type: De-bossed finish - the text will be recessed into the tin.
Pattern: Pearlescent finish - this will help to give a shimmer effect which will make the design look more sophisticated.
Preparing document for print:
I have decided to print the net on a clear sticker so that the tin is still integral to the design, so any white bits on the net are actually where the tin would be. For stickers I need to create a two layer document on illustrator, one for the cut out and one for the design. The cut out layer needs to be on top of the design.
I have tried to mock up what the pattern will look like on top of the tin colour.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Type Experiments
Type Experiments:
I need to display the information on the tin in a clear organised way which reflects a luxury brand. I have decided to call the brand 'Baraka Coffee' based on the research I have done about Ethiopian coffee ceremonies - Baraka is the 3rd round of coffee which is considered to bestow a blessing.
Type Selection:
I wanted to have a look at both serif and sans serif type styles. Serif has a more classic, old fashioned style which could appeal to the luxury market but sans serif has a more clean minimalist approach which could also work well.
From the list above I chose my favourite ones to mock up so that I could see which one would work the most appropriately.
Clarendon LT Std - Roman
Anton - Regular
Josefin Sans - Regular
DIN Alternate - Bold
Volkorn - Bold
Futura - Bold
Crimson Text - Bold
Rosario - Bold
My favourite typefaces are Anton as I think it would work really well with the pattern, however I don't think it looks like a luxury brand. I also like Josefin Sans, it has a nice consistent weight and sharp edges, the simplicity adds to the minimalist luxury feel. Lastly I think that Volkorn works well the bold serif style has a classic look helping to give that luxury feel.
Feedback:
Out of the designs that I showed the favourites were:
Josefin Sans - luxury minimalism, works well with pattern, current trend - could be adjusted slightly by increasing the kerning between letterforms to enhance luxury appeal.
Futura - modern style, similar boldness as pattern would work cohesively, clear and easy to read, might not necessarily be very luxurious.
Volkorn - classic look, luxury feel, aged design, contrasts with pattern design.
Development:
Based on the feedback I decided to adjust the kerning on all 3 typefaces to see what that did for the overall design. I also adjusted the type size based on feedback, the smallest being 10pt.
I think that Josefin Sans works the most appropriately giving a nice clean minimal feel to the design, which works well with the pattern, to help make the design look more luxury.

As Im working with a cylinder tin I've worked out the circumference, so that I can prepare a net for the design.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Pattern Development
Pattern Development:
Based on the feedback I have decided to work further with the 3rd pattern, adding colour to see what works the most appropriately. I played around with the different colours that are used within the baskets.
Feedback:
I showed the different colours combinations to a few of my peers and although they did like the bright colours they were unsure whether it fitted into the luxury market. It was suggested to maybe work with one colour and do it tonal so light to dark. This might help the design seem more harmonious than the current clashing of colours.
Tonal Patterns:
After doing the red I have realised that the colour tones are too similar so I need to adjust that slightly for a better tonal pattern. I think that the orange works really well the tones work together in harmony. I don't think that it works as well with the yellow, so Im going to try out a different colour that works with orange and red.
I think that the purple works better than the yellow as it will show up more on the tin.
I have adjusted the red so that the tonal variation can be seen more clearly.
As I am doing a set of 3 I am going to use the red, orange and purple as my set and to differentiate between the different roasts.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Pattern Designs
Pattern Designs:
I started by sketching out patterns similar to those on the baskets, but I felt that it would be easier and quicker to mock up the designs in illustrator.
Initial Patterns:
This pattern is very similar to the ones on the baskets but it is quite an intense design so colour would have to be used sparingly.
I like the bold lines and the more simple approach to the pattern but it still relates well to the basket patterns.
This design could also be quite intense but depending on how colour would be applied it could work well.
Feedback:
Showing these initial patterns to my peers the favourite is the 3rd design. It was felt that this would work most appropriately for the luxury market having a simpler design than the others, but still relates to the Ethiopian basket weaving. The thick bold lines also make it stand out attracting attention. I will need to consider how I am going to use colour as I don't want to take away the luxury appeal.

Initial Patterns:
The first pattern I made out of inter-lapping triangles which has created quite a geometric design. I think that this would work well with the luxury style but it might be too far away from the Ethiopian style.

OUGD603 Brief 04: Ethiopian Basket Weaving (Further Research)
From doing further research I like the idea of basing the design around an Ethiopian coffee ceremony. It was mentioned that the women wears white with bright embroidery patterns, as well as the patterns on the jebana and the cups. I have decided to look at the Ethiopian basket weaving to see the types of patterns they use and the bright bold colours.
Ethiopian Basket Weaving:
Baskets play a major role in Ethiopian culture and society and are seen as functional, decorative, and sacred items throughout the country.
The baskets use bright contrasting colours such as:
- Red
- Pink
- Yellow
- Purple
- Blue
- Orange
- Green
Pattern styles:
- Zig-zag
- Triangle / diamonds
- Swirls
I want to try and create my own patterns in a similar style, but I will need to keep in mind that it is for the luxury market so the pattern might need to be toned down.
